We bought some boxed wine that an employee told us would last over a month. Beginning of week three, it is so strong and tasted terrible. What gives? Did we do something wrong?

Typically box wines will last three to four weeks when opened because of the air-tight bag. But, it may not always. If it had been exposed to heat, that can cause it to age much faster.

What do you recommend as a good sweet red wine?
I have found several sweet white wines but like reds as well. Thanks.

Mike,
Unfortunately there are not as many sweet reds on the market as whites, but have you tried a nice ruby Port from Portugal? Or maybe something like a Riunite Lambrusco. Also there are some very nice Late Harvest Zinfandels on the market.

Big Daddy, I don't have a favorite bottled water to add to fine scotch. For me, either a drop or two is enough to bring out the aromas. Also, one cube of ice will work.

My husband and I went to Italy on our honeymoon--and really loved how reliably good and cheap their table wine was at the restaurants there. Is there anything equivalent to that available here?

Everytime I have traveled to Italy and had their table wines, it is amazing how good and inexpensive they are. And it's hard to replicate them here in the U.S. But, come in and try Colosi Red from Sicily or the Monte Antico from Tuscany.

Must people will use a dry sherry for cooking, or sometimes a golden sheery (which is slightly sweeter.) E&J Gallo and Taylor's both have inexpensive dry sheery that should do the trick.

Can you recommend a good port that doesn't break the bank?

For under $20 ports, I think the best Tanwy Ports come from Australia with producers like Whisker's Blake and Jonsey. For traditional Ruby Ports, Cockburn's Reserve, Sandeman and Taylor's Finest Character offer the best values.

Suppose a wine "novice" wanted to stock a very modest wine collection and only had roughly $100 to spend. For a general purpose collection, which wines would you recommend he purchases?

I would try to mix a case of wine - 12 bottles. I would do maybe six reds, five whites and one dry rose. I would also try to buy from different countries. So for the reds, Spain, Italy, France, Australia and the U.S. The whites from New Zealand, France, Spain, Oregon and California. The Rose from France. Come in the store and I can pick you out the case.
